FAQ’s about coaching sessions

How do I book?

Give us a call on FREEPHONE 0800 298 5938, or email us. We will ask for your contact details and if your partner is coming, their details too, so that we can confirm the appointment and give you directions.

When do you see people?

Our normal appointments are during the day between 9.00am and 6.00pm. We do not schedule appointments on Wednesdays, so we can also book emergency appointments during evenings or weekends.

Our aim is to book first appointments as soon as possible because people often reach a crisis point before they realise they need help.

How do I pay?

You can pay by cheque or cash, when you arrive for your appointment. Please let us know if you would like to pay online in advance, via Paypal or BACS.

What happens during a coaching session?

We will ask you what you would like to have happen during the session and encourage you to tell us briefly about your issues as you perceive them. We will prompt you until we have a sense of the patterns of behaviour and responses you are running. If there are two of you, we will also observe the interaction between you. We will then reflect this back to you. This can either be a moment of insight, or confirmation that we have got to the heart of the matter.

From this point, we may suggest an exercise to find out more or to give you extra resources. We may give you ‘homework’ to help you practise new ‘habits’ or develop new skills.

Where does the coaching take place?

Generally we see people at our home, in Landford, Wiltshire, which is easily accessible from the M27 motorway or from South Wiltshire. If this is not suitable for you, please contact us and we can agree an alternative venue.  We do NOT see people in their own homes - the nature of relationship coaching demands a neutral venue - one without associated memories.

Why are your sessions so long?

We always anticipate reaching a ‘breakthrough’ moment. This doesn’t mean we can always resolve issues in a single session but it does mean some new understanding or change takes place. As a result we don’t like to end a session at unsatisfactory moments, Most clients reach their breakthrough moment at 1 ½ - 2 hours.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no hard and fast rule. We have found that as a rule of thumb, people need between 3 and 6 sessions to deal with the problem they bring along to the first session. We make a recommendation at the end of each session and then agree the number and frequency of sessions with you. Many clients like to book one session at a time, so they have time to assimilate what they learn before the next appointment.

What if I get upset?

We are used to helping clients when their emotions get the better of them. Some people get upset, others become angry, others show their frustration etc. This is all perfectly natural and it is important to acknowledge your feelings. ‘Letting feelings out’ in a safe environment, can be an important aspect of moving forward. However, we don’t ask you to dwell on negative situations. One of the benefits of NLP and metaphor work is that we are able to work on difficult situations without asking you to re-live them.

What if I remember something afterwards that I forgot to ask?

We encourage you to keep in contact after your session, either by email or by phone. That way you can ask us for help if things come up between sessions. With your permission, we also record your coaching session. We do not do anything with the recording other than save it.  However, we have occasionally found it useful if we or a client want to go over something that took place during a session.

Do I need to prepare?

Yes and no! If you have some particular issue(s) you want to address it can be helpful to have jotted down a few notes or to have thought about things in advance. We do not expect you to have done this and our questions will help you be clear about what is really troubling you. If you come for more than one session, we may ask you to do some ‘homework’ in between sessions. This will simply be practising some new habits or trying out some new strategies. We will ask you how you got on!

Why do you coach together?

See our article on co-coaching.  We do not charge extra for co-coaching.
