What is coaching in tandem?
Coaching in Tandem happens when two coaches support a client or clients during a session.
There are parallels with the model of family conferencing where all the professionals involved meet with the family concerned to arrive at the best solution based on a shared understanding. This avoids any misunderstanding between the professionals and enables the client(s) to find a more encompassing solution.
When is coaching in tandem useful?
Coaching in Tandem is especially useful when you are coaching couples, two people locked in a dispute, or two people who work closely together:
- From the clients’ perspective, two coaches minimise the risk of feeling marginalised. There are many reasons people worry about the coach ‘siding’ with the other party. They are often imagined, but no less real to them.
- Some clients relish both a male and female perspective on relationship issues
- From the coaches’ perspective, there is more to observe - both in terms of each individual as well as the interaction between them. It helps to have another person noticing, especially from a different location in the room.
Coaching in Tandem is also a development and supervision tool. All too often coaches are isolated once they have gone through their training. Observing another coach and being observed offers opportunities for ongoing development and constructive recommendations.
As with family conferencing, coaching in tandem is also a great way to bring together different skills, styles or expertise. This is really helpful when you want to inspire new or creative approaches, so that the sum of the coaching experience is greater than either person could have contributed individually.

Venue
Workshops are held at our home in the New Forest. If the weather is good we can make use of the garden, otherwise we have plenty of space for breakout sessions.
We provide refreshments and a light lunch.
